Known as “The Birthplace of First Aid in America,” Jermyn was named for John Jermyn, the president of the Jermyn Coffin- and Casket-Works, who worked in the area. Like the majority of Lackawanna County, Jermyn was a coal mining town, whose existence at one time depended on the industry and on the railroad that ran through the town. Jermyn is also known for the first town in American history to hold first aid training classes, hence the nickname.
