Muncy was the place of the famous Abolition Riot of 1842, where a local schoolhouse was attacked during an anti-slavery speech of an abolitionist speaker. Eighteen men were arrested and charged with the riot. Thirteen were convicted but eventually was pardoned by the governor. Muncy is also known for its high school football program – every year, Muncy and its rival Montgomery High School play for The Shoe, which Muncy has kept since 2010.
