YORK COUNTY — Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash on I-83

YORK COUNTY, PA (August 19, 2025) — One person was killed and another was hospitalized after a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 83 in York County early Friday morning, August 16, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Troopers said a sedan crashed in the southbound lanes in Newberry Township at 2:17 a.m. The scene is near the weigh station located between Exit 35, Route 177/Lewisberry, and Exit 33, Route 392/Yocumtown.

According to the York County Coroner’s Office, a man in his thirties died in the crash. His name has not yet been released. The other person was transported to the hospital, though their condition is unknown.

The Dangers of Early Morning Highway Crashes

Single-vehicle crashes during the early morning hours, like this fatal collision that occurred at 2:17 a.m., often involve factors that make them particularly deadly. At this time of night, drivers may be dealing with fatigue, impaired judgment, or reduced visibility that can lead to loss of vehicle control on high-speed highways.

Interstate 83 is a major north-south corridor through Pennsylvania that sees heavy truck traffic and high speeds, creating conditions where crashes can quickly turn fatal. The early morning timeframe suggests potential factors such as driver fatigue from late-night driving, impaired driving, or medical emergencies that could cause a driver to lose control.

The location near the weigh station between two major exits indicates this occurred on a stretch of highway where commercial and passenger vehicles share the roadway. Highway design features, road conditions, and weather factors will all be important elements in the investigation.

Interstate 83 Safety Challenges in NEWBERRY TOWNSHIP

Interstate 83 through York County carries thousands of vehicles daily, including significant commercial truck traffic traveling between Pennsylvania’s major metropolitan areas. The stretch in Newberry Township where this crash occurred represents typical highway conditions where high-speed travel requires constant driver attention.

The proximity to the weigh station may create additional traffic patterns as commercial vehicles slow down or merge, potentially creating hazards for other drivers who may not anticipate these movements, especially during overnight hours when visibility is reduced.

Single-vehicle highway crashes often result from driver error, mechanical failure, or medical emergencies that cause drivers to lose control and leave the roadway. The investigation will examine all potential contributing factors to determine what caused this tragic accident.

Emergency Response and Investigation

The response to this fatal crash demonstrates the coordinated effort required when serious accidents occur on major interstate highways. Pennsylvania State Police from the appropriate barracks would have responded along with emergency medical services and the York County Coroner’s Office.

The fact that one occupant died while the other survived and was hospitalized indicates the varying forces and injuries that can occur even within the same vehicle during a crash. Position within the vehicle, seatbelt use, and the specific dynamics of the collision all play roles in determining injury severity.

The ongoing investigation by Pennsylvania State Police will examine factors such as speed, vehicle condition, road conditions, driver impairment, and any mechanical issues that may have contributed to the crash. Interstate crashes often require detailed accident reconstruction to determine causation.

Legal Rights After Fatal Highway Crashes

When fatal crashes occur on Pennsylvania highways, surviving family members may have legal options to pursue compensation through wrongful death claims. These cases can involve various potential defendants depending on the cause of the crash, including other drivers, vehicle manufacturers, or government entities responsible for road maintenance.

The surviving occupant who was hospitalized may face significant medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and potential long-term disabilities from injuries sustained in this high-speed crash. Pennsylvania law allows injured parties to seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.

In single-vehicle crashes, determining liability can be complex and may involve investigating potential mechanical defects, road design issues, or maintenance problems that could have contributed to the accident. Experienced legal counsel is essential for thoroughly investigating all potential causes and liable parties.
