ALLEGHENY COUNTY — Two-Vehicle Crash on Route 28 Kills One, Injures Two

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PA (July 16, 2025) — One person was killed and two others injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 28 this morning during rush hour.
The crash occurred around 8:45 a.m. on Route 28 northbound near the 40th Street Bridge in the Strip District. According to Pennsylvania State Police, a pickup truck rear-ended a compact car that had slowed due to heavy traffic conditions.
The impact caused the compact car to be pushed into the concrete median barrier. The driver of the compact car was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the compact car was transported to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the pickup truck was also transported to Allegheny General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene.
The northbound lanes of Route 28 were closed for approximately two hours while emergency responders worked to clear the scene and conduct their investigation. Traffic was diverted onto local streets, causing major delays throughout the morning commute.
The Pennsylvania State Police investigation remains ongoing.
Rush Hour Traffic Accidents in Pennsylvania
Navigating the aftermath of a car accident requires specialized legal knowledge. Insurance companies often attempt to minimize payouts, even in tragic circumstances.
Understanding the most frequent causes of rush hour accidents can help raise awareness about preventable tragedies:
- Following Too Closely: Heavy traffic conditions can lead to tailgating, reducing reaction time when vehicles suddenly stop or slow.
- Distracted Driving: Using phones, checking navigation, or any activity that takes attention away from the road can be deadly during busy traffic periods.
- Aggressive Driving: Road rage, lane changing without signaling, and impatience during congested conditions increase accident risk.
- Speed Differential: Vehicles traveling at different speeds in heavy traffic can create dangerous situations.
- Fatigue: Early morning and evening rush hours coincide with times when drivers may be tired or drowsy.
- Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, and poor visibility during commuter hours contribute to serious accidents.
