How Fast Does An Airbag Deploy
An airbag inflates extremely quickly, typically within a few hundredths of a second after the vehicle’s crash sensors determine that deployment is necessary. The inflation process itself can occur in roughly 20 to 50 milliseconds, depending on the airbag system and vehicle. Because airbags have to be fully inflated before an occupant moves significantly forward during a collision, deployment is deliberately rapid. The bag then begins venting almost immediately so that it can cushion the occupant rather than remain rigid. This speed is one reason drivers and passengers should sit a safe distance from the steering wheel or dashboard and always use seat belts. Airbags are supplemental restraint systems, meaning they are designed to work with seat belts rather than replace them. Deployment timing, force and the specific airbags activated depend on factors including crash direction, severity, sensor readings, occupant position and the vehicle’s design. Not every collision will cause an airbag to deploy.
