What is an IVC filter?
IVC filters are small cage-like medical devices temporarily or permanently inserted into the Inferior Vena Cava vein in the leg. They are used to stop a blot clot before it can travel to the heart or lungs. They are implanted in individuals who are at risk for pulmonary embolisms and are unable to take blood thinners. Most IVC filters are intended for temporary use. However, in many cases, the filter cannot be safely removed. The longer the filter remains in place, the greater the chances for complications. Patients have experienced injury from filters that have broken, moved, or become embedded in the vein wall. In 2010, and again in 2014, the FDA issued safety warnings.
There have been 921 unfavorable reports related to IVC filters communicated to the FDA between 2005 and 2010. Of those, 36% were reports of device migration, 16% were reports of embolisms of an intact device or a fractured piece of the IVC filter, 8% perforation of the vena cava, 6% were reports for fractured filters. The remaining reports for were other problems, including issues with device removal.
