The borough of Archbald was actually named for the first mayor of Carbondale James Archbald. It was settled by many Irish immigrants who were fleeing the potato famine at the time. As the seventh largest borough in Pennsylvania, Archbald is known for the 150-arce Archbald Pothole State Park, a geologic feature that formed during the Wisconsin Glacial Period approximately 15,000 years ago. It was discovered while a coal miner was attempting to extend a mine shaft in 1884.
