Founded in 1850, Montour County was named for Andrew Montour, an interpreter who served with George Washington during the French and Indian War. The county is located in the Ridge-and-Valley Province of the Appalachian Mountains and is part of the Marcellus Shale Formation. Its county seat is Danville and is part of the Bloomsburg-Berwick metropolitan area.
Montour County also has some of the most major highways in Pennsylvania. Not only does Interstate 80, one of the most heavily traveled interstates in the country, run right through it, but it also has US Route 11, PA Route 44, and PA Route 254. These highways are known for heavy volume of traffic and many truck and car accidents.
