If your brakes fail, concentrate on reducing speed while maintaining steering control. Remove your foot from the accelerator and press the brake pedal firmly. If the pedal is soft or sinks toward the floor, pumping it may sometimes restore enough hydraulic pressure to slow the vehicle. Shift progressively into lower gears to use engine braking. Apply the parking or emergency brake gradually, because sudden application can lock the rear wheels and cause a skid. Activate the hazard lights and use the horn if necessary to alert other drivers. Look for a safe shoulder, escape ramp, uphill road or open area where the vehicle can come to a stop. Do not switch the ignition off while moving if doing so could lock the steering or disable power assistance. After stopping, arrange for the vehicle to be towed rather than driving it again.
