Passing car sends van of 13 Amish farmers under a tractor killing five and injuring nine in fatal accident

New York Accident Kills Five, Injures Nine

First in a series of fatal accidents: A north bound van carrying 13 farmers from the Amish community in Steuben County was sideswiped by a south bound car passing a slow-moving tractor sending the van into and under the tractor killing 5 of the passengers.  Seven others in the van were seriously injured.  The driver and passenger of the tractor were also injured.  The driver of the car that caused the Tuesday afternoon accident was not injured, and he has been charged with five counts of criminally negligent homicide, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, unsafe passing, speed not reasonable and prudent, and failure to keep right after passing. He is being held on $125,000 cash bail or $250,000 bond.

 

Road Wash-Out in Wyoming Leaves Four Dead

Wyoming Highway 130 was washed-out early Wednesday morning by the swollen Brush Creek leaving a 9-foot-deep, 25-foot-wide channel that sent a van carrying a family of five into the rushing waters.  The father, and driver of the van, was able to escape, but his wife and three children drowned.  A rescue worker also got trapped in his vehicle when he was carried away by the water.  He was rescued and hospitalized with injuries.  The family had been camping at North Brush Creek Campground near Ryan Park.

 

Intoxicated Driver Leaves New Orleans Woman Dead

An early Sunday morning accident at the intersection of Airline Highway and Bellevue Drive in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, apparently caused by a drunk driver, left a 53-year-old New Orleans woman dead.  The woman was crossing Airline Highway when the man, driving a Lincoln Continental, smashed into the passenger side of the woman’s vehicle.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.  The man was charged with driving while intoxicated.

 

Two-Car Accident Sends Six to the Hospital

A Sunday afternoon, two-vehicle accident in Standish, Maine sent six people to the hospital.  A Suburban with three occupants was struck broadside by a Chevy pickup carrying four people when the driver of the Suburban was pulling onto Richville Road.  Police are investigating the cause of the accident, but believe driver inattention contributed to the crash.
