Where Do Most Car Accidents Happen

Most car accidents occur in places where vehicles frequently interact, particularly intersections, busy urban and suburban roads, parking areas and roads close to drivers’ homes. Intersections are common crash locations because drivers must manage traffic signals, stop signs, turns, pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles approaching from several directions. Rear-end collisions frequently occur on congested roads where traffic repeatedly slows and stops. Local streets and parking lots tend to produce many lower-speed crashes, while higher-speed roads and rural routes can produce more severe injuries when collisions occur. Curves, construction zones and locations with poor visibility can also increase risk. The often-repeated claim that most crashes happen “close to home” partly reflects exposure: people make many trips and drive many miles in their local area. For accident prevention, the useful lesson is to stay attentive even on familiar roads. Familiarity can encourage drivers to underestimate risks or operate on habit rather than actively scanning for hazards.
