Who Are The Worst Drivers

There is no objective group that can accurately be labelled “the worst drivers.” What data on drivers show is risk clusters around specific, measurable choices: driving impaired, speeding, texting or otherwise looking away from the road, tailgating, running a red light, driving while too tired to react in time. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving alone killed 3,208 people nationwide in 2024. None of that requires belonging to a demographic. It requires one bad decision at 60 miles an hour.

Age is the one place the numbers do point somewhere. Drivers age 16 to 19 have a fatal crash rate per mile driven that’s more than three times higher than drivers 20 and older, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This is not because teenagers are inherently reckless, but more because hazard recognition is a skill built through years of seat time. Older drivers face age-related changes in vision, and reaction time, making it harder to respond to a sudden hazard, even for someone who’s driven safely for fifty years. Neither pattern means every teenager or every senior on the road is dangerous. It means risk is unevenly spread across a huge range of individual ability, which is exactly why sorting people into “worst driver” categories misses the point.

The numbers also shift depending on how you measure them. A group’s crash rate looks different per licensed driver than it does per mile driven, and different again as a share of total crashes. A retiree driving to the grocery store twice a week has far fewer chances to crash than a commuter logging 30,000 miles a year, regardless of who’s actually the more careful driver.

None of this is academic if one of these drivers just hit you. If a driver’s own choice, whether that’s texting, speeding, driving drowsy, or blowing through a stop sign, put you in a wreck, that choice is what a personal injury claim is built around, not the other driver’s age or zip code.
