Who pays my medical bills while my case is pending?
The at-fault party’s liability insurer typically does not pay ordinary medical bills as treatment occurs. Depending on the accident, bills may first go through Pennsylvania auto medical benefits, health insurance, workers’ compensation, Medicare or Medicaid, another benefit plan, or the patient. Providers may still expect copayments, deductibles, or payment arrangements while the claim is unresolved.
Some payers can later seek reimbursement from a settlement, and Medicare may make conditional payments that must be resolved after a recovery. Keep every bill and explanation of benefits, use available coverage rather than delaying necessary care, and tell counsel about collection notices or benefit denials.
