If you get a flat tire, the best call is usually to your roadside assistance provider, auto insurer, vehicle manufacturer’s roadside service, a local towing company or a mobile tire service. Check your insurance card, vehicle app or warranty documents first — you may already have coverage you’re not using.

If you’re in a dangerous position, such as a live traffic lane or a narrow shoulder, prioritize safety before making any calls. Turn on your hazard lights and move the vehicle away from moving traffic if it’s safe to do so. Don’t attempt to change a tire beside fast-moving traffic if doing so puts you at risk.

Emergency services may be appropriate when the disabled vehicle creates an immediate road hazard or someone is in danger, but they’re not a substitute for routine roadside assistance.

When you call a service provider, give your exact location, a description of your vehicle and the nature of the problem. Ask about call-out, towing or tire-change charges before authorizing any non-emergency service.
