According to the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority’s latest 2025 study, 315,418 reports of healthcare-related events were sent to the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Reporting System (PA-PSRS), with procedure, test, and treatment errors, such as surgical and diagnostic problems, cited as the most frequently reported types of events. These accounted for 33.4% of reports from all Pennsylvania healthcare facilities, and 47.6% of those from non-hospital facilities.
Among the serious events recorded (which threatened patients’ health or lives), procedure, treatment, and testing complications, such as maternal and neonatal complications, anesthesia events, and healthcare-associated infections, were the most common types. What Are the Most Common Types of Personal Injury Cases in Scranton?
Our Scranton personal injury lawyers handle a wide range of cases, including:
Car Accidents
Car accidents are among the most common personal injury cases we handle. Most collisions result from preventable driving errors, including:
- Speeding – Excessive speed reduces reaction time and increases crash severity. Speeding is consistently one of the leading contributing factors to traffic crashes in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania 2024 Crash Facts and Statistics Report highlighted 23,427 speed-related crashes across the state, 357 of which proved fatal.
- Intoxicated Driving – Drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs have poor judgment and coordination, making them a danger to everyone on the road. Drinking drivers caused 6,929 local accidents in 2024, as well as 128 crashes that resulted in tragic deaths.
- Distracted Driving – Texting, talking on the phone, eating, or other distractions take a driver’s attention away from the road, often with devastating consequences. The NHTSA estimates that 3,240 people lost their lives in distracted driving accidents in 2025 alone.
- Tailgating – Following too closely prevents drivers from stopping safely when traffic slows or stops, frequently causing rear-end collisions.
- Running Red Lights and Stop Signs – Disregarding traffic signals causes dangerous intersection collisions.
Christopher Munley has achieved status as one of the Top 25 Motor Vehicle Trial Lawyers in the state, and has extensive knowledge of Pennsylvania’s traffic laws and motor vehicle injury statutes. Four of our lawyers are also board-certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy in Civil Trial Advocacy and Law, and are fully qualified to represent these complex injury cases in trial.
Truck Accidents
Commercial truck accidents often result in catastrophic injuries due to the size and weight disparity between large trucks and passenger vehicles. These cases may involve multiple liable parties, including trucking companies, cargo loaders, and maintenance providers.
According to the 2024 edition of Crash Facts and Statistics, there were 98,529 light trucks and vans and 7,312 heavy trucks involved in accidents across the state in 2024. The light truck accidents led to 337 fatalities, while 22 people died in local crashes involving heavy trucks that year.
If you or a loved one were one of the Pennsylvanians injured in these accidents, you have the right to seek compensation. Munley Law is the only firm in the state to have three lawyers board-certified in Truck Accident Law, including Marion Munley, who is also the first woman to chair the American Association for Justice’s Trucking Litigation Group.
Additionally, both Marion Munley and Daniel Munley are board-certified by the Academy of Trucking Accident Attorneys and members of the ATAA’s Board of Regents, offering specialized skill in handling commercial motor vehicle accident cases. These partners are both named to the National Trial Lawyers Association’s Top 10 Trucking Trial Lawyers list as well.
Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable on Scranton’s roads. Even minor collisions can result in serious injuries when a rider is thrown from their bike or struck by a vehicle. In Pennsylvania, 3,390 motorcycles were involved in crashes during 2024, which led to 219 tragic occupant fatalities.
Our lawyers have won verdicts worth up to $4.3 million for clients injured in motorcycle crashes and other road accidents, for which we have been recognized by both the Summit Council and the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum.
Medical Malpractice
Medical professionals owe patients a duty of care. When doctors, nurses, or other healthcare providers fail to meet accepted standards of care, resulting in injury, they can be held accountable through a medical malpractice claim. The Judicial System of Pennsylvania recorded a total of 58 claims filed in Lackawanna in 2024, which constituted a notable share of the 1,548 claims filed across the state.
With Marion Munley honored as Best Lawyers’ Lawyer of the Year for Medical Malpractice Law and Caroline Munley ranked as one of the Keystone State’s Top 25 Medical Malpractice Trial Lawyers by the National Trial Lawyers Association, we have the expertise to thoroughly investigate your case and hold the negligent parties accountable.
Workers’ Compensation
Injured workers may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits regardless of fault. These benefits can cover medical expenses and a portion of lost wages during your recovery period.
Munley Law has several workers’ compensation experts ready to assist you with your claim. Caroline Munley has been named a certified workers’ compensation specialist by the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Section on Workers’ Compensation Law, and J. Christopher Munley’s achievements for local workers have earned him the title of Best Lawyers’ Lawyer of the Year for Workers’ Compensation.
Wrongful Death
When negligence results in a fatal accident, surviving family members may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim to recover compensation for their loss, including funeral expenses, lost financial support, and loss of companionship.
Our partners have all been listed as some of the National Trial Lawyers Association’s Top 100 Trial Lawyers in Pennsylvania for their skill and dedication in bringing cases like these to justice.
