Legislation may improve safety in passenger car and semi truck accidents
Large trucks use our interstate and local roads to move goods across the country. Many regulations are in place to ensure that large semi trucks and smaller passenger cars share the road safely. Regulatory boards and national associations continue to measure accidents and their impacts, looking for ways to reduce serious injuries and fatalities when accidents do occur.
Sometimes when a semi-truck and car collide, the upper part of the passenger vehicle’s occupant compartment collapses and goes under the truck. This is known as underride and is the cause of serious injury and fatalities of those in the passenger vehicle. Underride can happen in rear, front and side collisions. There are regulations mandating trailers to have rear guards. These rear guards are a way to save lives in underride crashes, but these regulations have not been updated in 20 years. Currently there are no regulations for side or front guards. That may however change as a bipartisan Congressional effort mandating side underride guards on truck trailers (Stop Underrides Act of 2017) has been slowly making its way through Congress. The legislation currently under review looks to strengthen rear guard standards and require underride guards on the sides of trailers and on the front of trucks.
Data collected by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that in 2016 there were:
- 1,475 fatalities for those in passenger vehicles that collided with a semi-truck
- 295, 20%, of those were in a vehicle that collided with the side of a semi-truck
- 238, 16%, of those were in a vehicle colliding with the rear of a semi-truck
- 915, 62%, of those were involved in a frontal collision
- 27, 2%, oF those died when their passenger vehicle collided with an unknown area of the truck
