What to Do After a Car Accident in Philadelphia
Getting out of your car after an accident in Philadelphia can expose you to significant personal injury risks beyond those sustained in the initial collision. The city’s busy streets and highways create a hazardous environment for anyone standing on or near roadways, especially in areas with limited visibility or during adverse weather conditions.
When you exit your vehicle after an accident, you become vulnerable to secondary collisions from oncoming traffic. Other drivers may be distracted by the accident scene or unable to stop in time, putting you at risk of being struck. This danger is particularly acute on high-speed roads like I-95, the Schuylkill Expressway, or Roosevelt Boulevard, where Philadelphia sees some of its most serious pedestrian accidents.
Philadelphia’s weather conditions can further compound these risks. Rain, snow, or ice can create slippery surfaces that increase your chances of falling on the roadway or being hit by skidding vehicles. Additionally, the stress and confusion following an accident may impair your judgment, leading you to make unsafe decisions about where to stand or how to interact with traffic.
From a legal perspective, leaving your vehicle might also affect your personal injury claim. Insurance companies could argue that your injuries were worsened by your decision to exit the vehicle unnecessarily, potentially reducing your compensation. The safest approach is typically to remain inside your car with seatbelt fastened and hazard lights on until emergency responders arrive, unless staying in the vehicle poses a greater immediate danger.
