What Does “Esquire” Mean After a Lawyer’s Name and Does It Matter?
If you’ve ever seen “Esq.” after an attorney’s name and wondered what it means, you’re not alone. It sounds official. It sounds important. But “Esquire” simply means the person has passed the bar exam and holds a license to practice law.
If you’re trying to figure out whether an attorney is actually good — experienced, skilled, and proven in court — the title “Esq.” won’t tell you that. To find the right personal injury attorney, you need to know which credentials actually matter and what qualities to look for. We’ll walk you through both.

“Esquire” Is A Title With Old Roots
The word “esquire” goes back to medieval England. It was a social rank one step below that of a knight, used to describe men of standing and property. Over time, it became a general title of respect for educated professionals, including lawyers.
When the American legal system took shape in the 18th and 19th centuries, attorneys carried the title over from English legal tradition. Today, it’s used almost exclusively by lawyers in the United States, and it appears after a name rather than before it. For example, a lawyer named Jane Smith would be known as “Jane Smith, Esq.” rather than “Esquire Jane Smith.”
What “Esquire” Actually Tells You

That said, “Esq.” tells you that an attorney cleared that bar — literally. It doesn’t tell you what they’ve done since. Nor does it speak to their win rate, their courtroom experience, the complexity of cases they’ve handled, or how other attorneys and judges regard their work. A newly licensed attorney and a 30-year veteran with hundreds of trials under their belt both qualify to use it equally.
So when you’re searching for a personal injury attorney to handle a serious accident case, a workers’ compensation claim, or a truck accident lawsuit, “Esquire” is a reasonable starting point, but it’s only that. The attorneys who have gone further in their careers have credentials that reflect it, and those are the markers worth knowing.
“At Munley Law, our mission is simple: to provide all injury victims equal access to justice, even against the most powerful entities. For more than 65 years, we have been the voice for the injured, the forgotten, and those who need someone to stand beside them in their darkest hour.”

Choose a Personal Injury Attorney with Board Certification
When evaluating any attorney, board certification is one of the strongest, most meaningful credentials you can look for.
Board certification in legal specialties is administered by organizations like the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA). To become board certified, an attorney must:
- Show a proven record of verdicts and courtroom experience
- Submit peer references from judges and other attorneys who can speak to their skills
- Pass a written examination covering their area of specialization
- Maintain a spotless ethical record
This process verifies that an attorney hasn’t just practiced law; they’ve tried cases, handled complicated litigation, and earned the respect of their peers. Only a small percentage of practicing attorneys nationwide hold board certification in any specialty. Many firms have none.
Certifications that are especially relevant in personal injury law include:
- Civil Trial Certification: Recognizes attorneys with documented trial experience across civil litigation
- Truck Accident Law Certification: A specialty certification for attorneys who handle commercial vehicle and trucking accident cases
- Workers’ Compensation Specialist Certification: Recognizes attorneys with deep experience in workplace injury and compensation claims
Another marker worth looking out for is membership of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). Becoming an ABOTA member requires a verified record of jury trials and a peer election process. It’s not a certification you can apply for. You have to be invited based on your trial history.
If an attorney lists any of these credentials, it means outside organizations have reviewed their record and confirmed their experience.
