Drowsy Driving: A Serious Problem
This accident highlights a growing concern on American roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drowsy driving is one of the main causes of fatal car accidents in the U.S. In 2022 alone, there were 693 fatalities caused by drowsy driving. Experts warn that driving while fatigued can be as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol or while distracted.
The Scranton car accident lawyers at Munley would like to remind everyone to stay safe while on the roads. If you feel that you are getting sleepy while driving, here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Get a good night’s sleep before getting behind the wheel, especially in long trips
- Take regular breaks while on the road. Stop every two hours or every 100 miles
- Avoid driving between midnight and 6 am. That is the time most drowsy driving accidents occur
- Avoid taking any medication that will cause sleepiness
- Recognize the signs of fatigued driving such as yawning, drifting between lanes, or difficulty keeping your eyes open
- Drive with a passenger and take shifts on driving
- If you do feel sleepy, pull over in a safe area and take a 10-20 minute nap
Stay safe, everyone.
