Students Injured in School Van Crash in Tyrone Township, PA
Five children were sent to the hospital after their school van slid off the road and struck a pole on January 23.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred on the 700 block of Tape Worm Road in Tyrone Township around 2:30 p.m. The school van had been traveling southbound on Tape Worm Road when it approached a sharp turn. Because of the wet and slippery conditions of the road, the van left the roadway, sliding into a telephone pole.
All five students on the bus were transported to local hospitals with suspected minor injuries. The driver of the van was not injured.
The van was towed from the scene after experiencing extensive damage.
School Van Accidents in Pennsylvania
School van crashes present safety concerns and legal challenges that differ from traditional school bus accidents. These smaller vehicles, often used for special education transport, sports teams, or specific program activities, must adhere to strict federal and state safety regulations. However, accidents can occur due to various factors including driver fatigue, inadequate training, poor vehicle maintenance, or negligent driving behaviors. When these incidents happen, multiple parties may be held liable, including the school district, private transportation companies, vehicle manufacturers, or other motorists involved in the collision.
The injuries sustained in school van accidents can be particularly serious due to the vehicle’s smaller size and different safety features compared to full-sized school buses. Parents whose children are injured in school van accidents may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, ongoing care needs, pain and suffering, and other damages.
It’s important for families to understand that these cases often involve complex legal considerations, including governmental immunity laws when public schools are involved, and shorter statutory deadlines for filing claims against educational institutions.
