CHESTER COUNTY — Tractor-Trailer Rear-Ends SUV on I-95, Kills Two

CHESTER COUNTY, PA (July 18, 2025) — Two people were killed and one injured when a tractor-trailer rear-ended an SUV on Interstate 95 this morning.
The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. on I-95 northbound near mile marker 12 in Ridley Township. According to Pennsylvania State Police, a fully loaded tractor-trailer failed to slow down for traffic that had backed up due to construction work ahead.
The truck struck a Honda Pilot SUV from behind, crushing the rear portion of the vehicle. Two passengers in the back seat of the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV was transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center with serious injuries.
The truck driver was not injured in the crash. Initial investigations indicate the driver may have been distracted at the time of the collision.
The northbound lanes of I-95 were completely closed for over four hours while emergency responders worked to clear the massive wreckage and conduct their investigation. Traffic was diverted at the nearest exit, creating a backup that stretched for miles during the morning rush hour.
The Pennsylvania State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit is assisting with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Tractor-Trailer Accidents in Pennsylvania
Navigating the aftermath of a car accident requires specialized legal knowledge. Insurance companies often attempt to minimize payouts, even in tragic circumstances.
Understanding the most frequent causes of tractor-trailer accidents can help raise awareness about preventable tragedies:
- Driver Fatigue: Long hours and demanding schedules can lead to drowsy driving, significantly increasing accident risk.
- Distracted Driving: Using phones, GPS systems, or other activities that take attention away from the road can be deadly.
- Following Too Closely: Large trucks require much greater stopping distances, especially when fully loaded.
- Speeding: Excessive speed makes it impossible for truck drivers to stop in time when traffic conditions change suddenly.
- Improper Lane Changes: Truck drivers’ large blind spots can lead to devastating collisions when changing lanes.
- Construction Zone Hazards: Work zones with lane restrictions and speed reductions create dangerous conditions for large vehicles.
