Pennsylvania Electric Scooter Crashes with Cars: A Growing Safety Concern
Electric scooters have become popular in Pennsylvania cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, but a troubling trend has emerged: a dramatic increase in accidents between electric scooters and motor vehicles.
The Alarming Statistics
E-scooter accidents rose significantly, increasing from 7,700 in 2017 to 40,400 in 2023 nationwide. What makes these statistics particularly concerning is that 80% of fatal crashes involve collisions with cars, highlighting the vulnerability of scooter riders in traffic situations.
In Pennsylvania, the legal landscape adds complexity. Electric scooters are effectively banned under current Pennsylvania law, yet they continue to operate on streets and sidewalks throughout major cities, creating dangerous situations.
Why These Crashes Are So Dangerous
Several factors make scooter-car collisions particularly severe:
Speed Differential: Scooters reach speeds up to 20 mph while sharing roads with vehicles traveling 25-45 mph or faster.
Visibility Issues: Drivers often fail to see scooters as they move from sidewalk to street, causing surprise collisions.
Lack of Protection: Unlike cars, scooter riders have minimal protection during impact, leading to severe injuries including head trauma, broken bones, and internal injuries.
Common Crash Scenarios
The most frequent collision patterns include intersection crashes where drivers fail to yield, left-turn accidents where vehicles turn across a scooter’s path, and rear-end collisions when cars don’t notice slower-moving scooters.
Recent Tragedy
The dangers became apparent in a recent incident when two girls were severely injured after their electric scooter was hit by a car in Aston Township, with both victims sustaining life-threatening injuries.
Pennsylvania’s Legal Maze
Pennsylvania does not currently have specific laws governing electric scooters. Instead, they’re considered “motor-driven cycles,” which means they must comply with motorcycle regulations including registration, insurance, and equipment standards that most scooters cannot meet. This creates serious consequences for accident victims.
