Seat Belt Use in Car Crashes in Pennsylvania

Seat belts save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belt use in passenger vehicles saved nearly 15,000 lives in the U.S. in 2017. Nearly 50% of passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2022 were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident. Studies have shown that wearing your seat belt in the front seat of a passenger car reduces the risk of fatal and serious injuries.

Remember, airbags are not designed to replace seat belts. If you aren’t wearing your seat belt at the time of an accident, you could be thrown into the airbag with such force that it can cause an injury or even kill you. It is the best defense against impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers.

Pennsylvania law requires all drivers and front-seat passengers to wear seat belts. Children under 18 must be properly restrained regardless of their seating position. Failure to wear a seat belt is a primary offense in Pennsylvania, meaning law enforcement can stop and cite drivers solely for this violation.

Safety experts recommend these key steps for proper seat belt use:

  • Wear both the lap and shoulder belt
  • Ensure the lap belt sits across your hips, not your stomach
  • Position the shoulder belt across your chest, not behind your back or under your arm
  • Never put more than one person in a single seat belt

By following these safety guidelines and making seat belts a habit, drivers and passengers can significantly reduce their risk of death or serious injury in a crash.
