According to news reports, the incident happened just before 4 a.m. when the driver lost control of his vehicle on snow-covered roads, spinning into oncoming traffic and colliding with a box truck. Driving in Poor Weather Conditions
As the weather turns colder and snowier, Pennsylvania drivers need to be more cautious when driving on snowy and icy roads. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, there were 3,058 car accidents in the Commonwealth in 2023 that were caused by wintery weather conditions such as snow, ice, and freezing rain. Wet roads account for almost 18% of the car crashes in 2023, claiming the lives of 183 people.
Poor weather conditions demand extra caution on the roads, no matter what type of vehicle you are driving. Reduce your speed significantly on snow-covered roads and increase following distance to 8-10 seconds. Ensure your vehicle has proper winter tires and keep emergency supplies including blankets, flashlights, and snacks. If possible, avoid driving during snowstorms or when roads are icy, especially during early morning hours when visibility is limited and ice formation is more likely. If you must travel, share your route with someone and keep your phone fully charged.
Consider pulling over if conditions become too dangerous – no destination is worth risking your life. Check weather forecasts and road conditions before traveling, and remember that bridges and overpasses freeze first.
Stay safe on the roads this winter season.
