LUZERNE COUNTY — ATV Crash on I-80 in Sugarloaf Twp.
LUZERNE COUNTY (April 15, 2025) — A side-by-side off-road vehicle or ATV rolled down an embankment and caught on fire in Sugarloaf Township on Monday, April 14.
First responders were dispatched around 1:43 a.m. to Interstate 80 West near mile marker 249.
Sugarloaf Fire Chief reported that there is a road in Nescopeck Township that dead ends in that area, from which they likely originated. The side-by-side rolled down from a hill to the Interstate highway, down a steep rock embankment.
The two victims sustained injuries and burns. Valley Regional Medic/Valley Regional Fire and Rescue EMS arrived on scene and started patient care before the fire department. The victims were then transported to a hospital by Life Flight.
Investigations continue.

Luzerne County, PA – Police Investigate Fatal Hit and Run on I-80
LUZERNE COUNTY, PA (March 22, 2025) – State police are currently investigating a fatal hit and run accident on Interstate 80 in Luzerne County on March 20.
According to news reports, the crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-80 in Butler Township near Conyngham. Police state the victim was outside his disabled vehicle when he was struck by a second commercial vehicle passing his location.
He was flown to Geisinger Wyoming Valley, where he later died.
The interstate was shut down for hours and reopened around 4:30 p.m.

Luzerne County, PA – Police Investigate Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash in Nanticoke
LUZERNE COUNTY, PA (February 25, 2025) – Police are currently investigating a fatal car crash in Nanticoke on February 24.
According to news reports, the two-vehicle crash occurred by a Turkey Hill convenience store at the intersection of Alden Road and West Main Street near the Newport Township border around 5 p.m.
Investigators have confirmed at least one person died in the crash.
Main Street in Nanticoke was closed down for several hours as police investigated the accident, which is still under investigation.

Luzerne County, PA – Pedestrian Hit By Car While Crossing I-80
LUZERNE COUNTY (January 8, 2025) – A pedestrian was hit and killed by a car while crossing Interstate 80 in Butler Township, Luzerne County.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers were called to a crash on I-80 around 10 p.m. on January 1. At the scene, the police reported a crash occurred prior to the pedestrian being struck. He had left his car and began walking across both lanes of traffic for unknown reasons. While walking across I-80, he was stuck by another vehicle.
The other driver was not injured. Police are investigating the accident.

Luzerne County, PA – Woman Dies After Head-On Crash on the PA Turnpike
LUZERNE COUNTY (December 5, 2024) – A 65-year-old woman died after a wrong-way car crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Luzerne County on November 29. According to state police, the woman had succumbed to her injuries after the Nissan she was riding in was hit head-on by another vehicle that entered the Turnpike in the wrong direction.
News reports state the driver traveling northbound had merged onto the Turnpike at the interchange’s southbound ramp and hit the Nissan a short distance up the ramp. The other driver was cited for driving in the wrong direction.
The driver of the Nissan was also injured and hospitalized.
