According to Black’s Law Dictionary, a request is defined as “a formal demand, made in writing, for something specific.” As such, requests are integral to legal proceedings, serving various purposes such as obtaining documents, admissions, examinations, or rulings from the court.
Requests play a crucial role in litigation and legal proceedings by facilitating the exchange of information, clarifying issues in dispute, and advancing case management. Bigger Trucks Threaten Public Safety and Infrastructure
“Bigger Trucks: Bad For America’s Local Communities,” a letter written by over 1,000 local government leaders, was presented to Congressional Capitol Hill offices on February 22, 2018. The letter, signed by mayors, local engineers and public works employees, argues that “Longer and heavier trucks would cause significantly more damage to our transportation infrastructure, costing us billions of dollars that local government budgets simply cannot afford, compromising the very routes that American motorists use every day.” Currently, federal limits are 80,000 pounds in gross vehicle weight. Notably, some states allow heavier trucks on roads that are not a part of the interstate system.

New Rules Give Patients Better Access to Medical Records
A recent article in the New York Times explains new guidelines issued this month that aim to give patients easier access to their own medical information. In our view, this is an extremely important development, because having access to medical information allows people to take control of their own healthcare, and to find and fix potentially dangerous errors in their records. After a car accident that results in injuries, or an illness requiring hospitalization, it is important that people be informed about their care.
As the article notes, patients have long had the right to view their own medical records, but they frequently face obstacles that prevent them from exercising that right.

Follow Up: Supreme Court Hears UPS Pregnancy Discrimination Case
Wednesday, the Supreme Court finally issued an opinion on the pregnancy discrimination case brought against UPS, siding in favor of former employee Peggy Young.
At the end of last year, we blogged about Peggy Young, the former UPS driver who brought a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit against United Parcel Service nearly ten years ago. When Young became pregnant with her third child, her doctor advised her that she should not lift more than 20lbs. Because her job duties required her to sometimes lift up to 70lbs, Young requested light duty assignment, which was available for other employees who could not perform their normal job duties due to a work injury, disability, or suspension of their Dept. of Transportation certification. Her request was denied and placed on unpaid medical leave.
