Fatal Hit and Run Car Accident in Philadelphia, PA
A woman in a wheelchair was killed in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, on Tuesday, October 15, in a hit and run car accident. According to news reports, the woman was hit by a person driving a silver car on the 2200 block of Reservoir Drive and suffered injuries to her head and other parts of her body. The driver had fled the scene. The police stated the impact was so great that the woman was flung 100 feet, and the medical boot she had been wearing was found that distance from her body. The wheelchair was found nearby, shattered.
This is the third hit and run incident that has occurred in Philadelphia in the past four days. On Sunday, October 13, another fatal hit and run incident occurred in North Philadelphia after a pedestrian was struck and killed by someone driving a silver Hyundai Sonata.

The Severity of Hit and Run Accidents in Philadelphia
These tragic events underscore the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to take responsibility for their actions. The community’s role in providing tips has been vital in solving some of these cases, demonstrating the power of collective vigilance in ensuring public safety.
Despite these recent incidents, police data shows that hit-and-run car crashes have decreased compared to last year. As of Tuesday, there have been 473 hit-and-run crashes in 2024, down from 588 in the same period last year. Fatal hit-and-runs have also decreased from 36 to 26. However, hit and run accidents are still a serious problem throughout Pennsylvania. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a hit and run crash occurs somewhere in the United States every 43 seconds.
Although the hit and run driver’s motivations is mostly driven by fear of getting caught, the consequences of a hit and run accident are severe. A hit and run driver could face severe legal penalties, including fines, license suspension, and potential jail time, especially if the incident resulted in severe injuries or death.
These incidents are also traumatic for the victims. In many cases, they are left without immediate assistance from the driver and could face challenges paying their medical bills, especially if the driver is never found.
As cities like Philadelphia work to reduce these incidents, the Philadelphia car accident attorneys at Munley Law urge all road users to remain vigilant, follow traffic laws, and prioritize the safety of pedestrians and other vulnerable groups. Education about the severe consequences of fleeing an accident scene may also help deter potential hit-and-run drivers.
