LACKAWANNA COUNTY – Woman Dies After I-84 Car Crash

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, PA (May 17, 2025) – A woman had died from her injuries after a crash on I-84 on May 15.
According to news reports, the crash occurred on the left side of I-84 westbound when the road curved. The woman continued straight instead of taking the curve, leaving the roadway to the south of I-84. The car hit several signs until it rolled to a stop south of I-84 near mile marker 6.
Police say the woman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. She was ejected from the car and pronounced dead when crews arrived at the scene.
No one else was in the car. There is no word on the cause of the crash.

Despite efforts to save him, including three people lifting the SUV off him, he succumbed to his injuries at Geisinger Community Medical Center.
Throughout Pennsylvania, collisions with fixed objects (such as trees, poles, or barriers) are the most common type of accident, accounting for a significant portion of fatalities. Angle crashes, where the front of one vehicle strikes the side of another at an intersection, are also particularly dangerous due to limited side protection in vehicles. Alcohol continues to be a major factor in fatal crashes, with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reporting 308 alcohol-related traffic deaths in 2023.
These statistics highlight the ongoing need for improved road safety measures, education, and enforcement in Lackawanna County.
