Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Philadelphia
Philadelphia’s urban landscape presents significant risks for pedestrians. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, pedestrian-related accidents represent almost 3 percent of the total reported traffic crashes in the Commonwealth but account for more than 15 percent of all traffic crash fatalities. In 2023, there were 56 pedestrian fatalities in Philadelphia, the highest number of fatal pedestrian accidents in Pennsylvania.
Common factors in these incidents include:
- Drivers exceeding speed limits in residential areas
- Distracted driving, particularly around busy intersections
- Impaired driving, especially during evening hours
- Failure to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
- Poor street lighting and limited visibility
- Adverse weather conditions
These accidents devastate families, both emotionally and financially. Beyond the profound grief of losing a loved one, families often face substantial funeral expenses and loss of household income. While no legal action can fully address such a loss, pursuing a wrongful death claim may help families secure needed financial support and hold negligent parties accountable.
