Pennsylvania Celebrates International Walk to School Month

PennDOT is joining forces with other organizations across the United States, and the world, in supporting International Walk to School Month throughout October.  Using the motto “Get up, Get out, and Get Moving!” the organizers are focusing on demonstrating the role walking and bicycling to school can play in improving health, safety and community life.

According to iWalk, the official website of International Walk to School Month:

“International Walk to School Month gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking. Walkers from around the world walk to school together for various reasons — all hoping to create communities that are safe places to walk.”

“Every child should have the opportunity to walk to school safely,” said Transportation Deputy Secretary John Porcari. “Walk to School Day [held Oct. 3] encourages children to experience walk-friendly environments and affirms the importance of walking and biking for a new generation of Americans.”

However, as Pennsylvania families celebrate the month, our Pennsylvania car accident attorneys encourage motorists to stay alert for the increased number of pedestrians and bikers taking to the roads.  Drivers should be extra cautious in neighborhoods and around schools where children congregate and tend to dart into traffic.

PennDOT reminds drivers “to remain vigilant and follow school bus laws as students and school buses return to the roadways.”

Parents are encouraged to share the following pedestrian safety tips from PennDOT with their children to help keep them safe as they enjoy their walks to school.

  • Wear light-colored, reflective clothing so you can be seen.
  • Walk against traffic.
  • Make eye contact with motorists before crossing the street.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.

Our Pennsylvania accident attorneys ask drivers to share the road with pedestrians and bicyclists.  Slowing around schools and at intersections, driving focused and sober, and staying on the lookout for children and adults on the roadways are all good driving behaviors that can help save lives.
