Uninsured Motorist Coverage

What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM) is an addition to a standard auto insurance policy that provides coverage for damages incurred by an individual in an accident. It takes effect when the other driver is at fault for the accident and is uninsured.

UM does not pay anything to the uninsured driver in an accident, only the injured person with a policy. It ensures that when a person is injured by an uninsured driver, they can recover damages at least up to the limits of their policy.  UM can cover all medical expenses brought about by an accident, cover wages that are lost as a result of the injured party not being able to work following an accident, and even cover damages in hit and run cases in which the uninsured driver flees the scene without the possibility of being identified.

UM is important because it is one of the only ways to protect against uninsured drivers in case of an accident. It prevents drivers from needing to pay extensive out-of-pocket costs in such circumstances, which increases overall well-being and financial security. UM is so important that some states require that drivers purchase them with their insurance policies, rather than letting it be optional.
