Pennsylvania Students Given Firsthand Account of the Dangers of Distracted Driving
Recent television commercials by AT&T are aimed at educating drivers of the hazards of texting behind the wheel. The campaign is meant to appeal to the audience by showing the devastation distracted driving can cause by having real-life victims, or family members of deceased victims, tell their personal stories of how a distracted driving accident changed their lives.
Recently, students at Central Penn College in East Pennsboro Township received a firsthand account of the tragedy of distracted driving. Amanda Kloehr, who was distracted while driving in 2008, was in an accident that “cost an eye, nearly cost her life and led to more than 20 surgeries to rebuild her smashed face,” according to PennLive.com.
Kloehr doesn’t remember the details of the night, but said that during her drive from New Jersey to Virginia she was constantly distracted. She said she passed the time by talking on her cellphone, looking for a radio station or using her GPS. She doesn’t know exactly what had her distracted when she crashed into the back of a stopped tractor-trailer.
Many in the audience stopped and took notice of Kloehr’s story. Students find her courageous for telling her story. Some said that it makes them feel a little less invincible seeing what she has had to go through.
Kloehr pointed out her scarred face saying, “This is what lucky looks like. I’m still here, and I didn’t kill anyone.”
“I want you to think about it and look at it. This could be you or the person you hit because you thought that text message or phone call was more important than paying attention to the road,” she added.
Kloehr plans to continue to take her message to others, and has launched a new website, AmandaReconstructed.com, to help her get her message across and to book engagements.
“I want to tell as any people as I can so I can save as many lives as possible,” Kloehr said.
Our Pennsylvania personal injury attorneys encourage parents to review Kloehr’s story with their young drivers to help them realize that distracted driving can change lives forever. We cannot stress enough the dangers of texting while driving. The only safe driving behavior is to stay fully focused and alert.
