An Accident Report (or Incident Report) is an official record that provides a detailed and accurate account of an event, such as an accident, injury, or near miss, that occurred in a specific location, usually within an organization or workplace. They are created on-site by an authority figure such as a police officer or a hospital staff member.
The above individual offices or hospitals, agencies like the National Transportation Safety Board produce and file accident reports. Most reports focus on a single accident. These reports contain information such as details of the specified accident, analysis of factual data, conclusions and probable cause of the accident, and in some cases, related safety recommendations.
Accident reports often serve as evidence in legal disputes. They can establish facts and assist in determining liability in negligence cases, assessing claims, and determining compensation for damages or injuries in insurance claims. Police reports specifically are considered public records and can typically be requested for access by any individual, often through contact with local law enforcement.
